Life-giving spring in Constantinople

The Icon of the Theotokos “Life-Giving Spring” is one of the most famous and venerated icons in Orthodoxy. Its name is connected with miraculous events that took place in the 5th century in Constantinople.

One day, a simple soldier named Leo met a blind traveler who was begging for water. A mysterious voice told Leo about a spring nearby, but he couldn’t find it. The voice spoke to him again, calling him “emperor,” and guided him to an abandoned spring in the middle of a grove. For the third time, the voice instructed him to draw the murky water, give it to the blind man to drink, and anoint his eyes with it. The blind man immediately regained his sight. Only then did Leo realize that the Most Holy Theotokos herself had been speaking to him and revealing this healing spring.

News of the miracle quickly spread throughout the city. Years later, just as the Virgin had foretold, the soldier ascended the imperial throne as Emperor Leo I. He cleaned and restored the spring, built a magnificent church over it, and dedicated it to the Most Holy Theotokos. The church immediately became a place of pilgrimage for thousands seeking healing, and the spring received the name “Life-Giving” in witness to the countless miraculous healings.

The icon of the Theotokos painted in honor of this event for the church received the same name. On the icon, the Mother of God is depicted with the Christ Child in a chalice-like font, from which streams of life-giving water flow. Around the pool where the healing water collects are people thirsting for help and healing.

The famous spring has survived to this day. Together with the church of the same name, it is located in the Balıklı district of Istanbul, Turkey. It is now an active women’s Orthodox monastery dedicated to the icon of the “Life-Giving Spring” under the Ecumenical Patriarchate and remains an important center of pilgrimage.

Before the “Life-Giving Spring” icon, people pray for healing — both of bodily and spiritual illnesses, ailments, and passions. The feast day of the Icon of the Theotokos “Life-Giving Spring” is celebrated on Bright Friday (the Friday of Bright Week, right after Pascha).

Prayer to the Icon of the “Life-Giving Spring”

O Most Holy Virgin Mary, Mother of our Lord God, you are the living and overflowing Source of healing and grace! Look kindly on our prayers, even though we are sinners, and grant healing to our souls and bodies. Just as you once gave sight to the blind, strength to the lame, and restored health to the sick through your miraculous spring, so now, gracious Lady, heal the wounds of our hearts and bodies. Calm the passions that burn inside us, cleanse us from every sin, and give us peace and comfort in this life and in the life to come. We bow before you and ask: O Life-Giving Spring, pour out upon us the streams of your mercy and grace! Visit us with your motherly care, protect us from all evil, and guide us to salvation. You are our hope and protection. We give glory to you, together with your Son and our God, and to the All-Holy Spirit, now and always, and forever. Amen.
